High Sea Charters says, “2012 is another fantastic summer for striped bass fishing charter action on Long Island Sound!”
Fishing Charter Captain Chris Leighton says the big striped bass are back!
Striped bass fishing action is in full swing and fishing charter Captain Chris Leighton says the striped bass season on Long Island Sound has gotten off to a great start this year. “We didn’t start seeing big bass right away this spring,” recalls Leighton, who has fished his whole life off the Connecticut coast, “but that’s normal. Now, several week into this year’s striper season, we’re seeing some nice fish near Clinton and Westbrook and we’re making a lot of our fishing charter customers very happy.”
Leighton is one the more experienced and successful fishing charter captains in Connecticut who regularly fishes the part of Long Island Sound that produced the world record striped bass about a year ago. Leighton says that the striped bass fishing charters that he’s taken out this season have been successful and he continues to see action on the water that qualifies this part of Long Island Sound as one the best places in the world for catching trophy striped bass. And now that there are schools of bunker (Atlantic menhaden) around again, the world class striped bass are back as well.
High Sea Charters knows how to find trophy stripers
So far this season, fishing charter Captain Chris Leighton has taken out several fishing charter customers who have been in the right place at the right time for nice hook-ups with fat stripers. As most experienced anglers know, a fishing charter captain must have knowledge of several locations that schools of striped bass frequent in order to able to pick the best location considering the variable conditions on any given day.
High Sea Charters also welcomes anglers of all ages. Fishing charter Captain Chris Leighton has already made a few families very happy this season in the never-ending quest for trophy striped bass. 2012 has been been pretty calm weatherwise, so far, but, now that the temperatures have crept up into the summer heatwave numbers, it really takes an experienced fishing charter captain to find the world class striped bass that are out there. “These fish move around and you have to keep up with them. You have to know what their natural food source is and you have to be ready to follow that.”

Freshwater fishing season has opened in Connecticut and that can mean only one thing: some of the best saltwater fishing is right around the corner and the trophy stripers will be here soon! Our boat is in the water at Port Clinton Marina and everything checks out just fine. The phone has begun to ring and fishing charter dates are filling in. Fishing Charter Captain Chris Leighton is beginning to smile once again (see picture at top of page – yes, like that).

We Miss the Bunker and The Striped Bass Too – We’ve Got Winter Fishing Charter Blues (Not to Be Confused with Bluefish!)
Fishing Charter Captain Chris Leighton was surfing the ‘net this morning, dreaming of fishing charter madness until he had visions of schools of bunker swimming in his head – literally. At High Sea Charters we take the time to learn as much as we can about fishing, fishing charters and the environment from federal, state and local officials. We also look to university studies and projects responsible for monitoring Long Island Sound, our greatest natural resource here in the state of Connecticut. Well, while we are waiting for the saltwater to warm up enough to bring in trophy striped bass to their summer home, we thought you would enjoy this video we found on a blog from the University of Maryland.
Bunker (Menhaden) and Striped Bass – Chesapeake Bay, Long Island Sound
The video clip contains a revealing computer generated view of the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States. For those who are always looking for a view from the bottom, we hope you’ll enjoy this video that shows how oysters and crabs, along with schools of bunker (also known as Atlantic Menhaden) and striped bass sharing the bottom contours of a neighboring estuary. High Sea Charters knows that many of the stripers and bunker (menhaden) we see on a mid-summer fishing charter have migrated north from the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. It just makes sense for both charter captains and customers to learn as much as we can about other bodies of waters around us. We remind all anglers to fish and gather live bait like bunker responsibly. We hope you enjoy the video. And may you too have visions of bunker swimming in your head
If you would like, you can to read more on the blog where we found the video.

Blackfish (or Tautog): Mmm, Mmm, Good!
Blackfish, tautog , rockfish, whatever you call them, they are considered by many to be the finest eating fare you can catch in Long Island Sound. If you’ve never had tautog (pronounced tau-TOG’, the old Native American name) you must give it a try. These hardy denizens of underwater rock piles are some of the toughest fish around. To quote one experienced angler, you can catch a tautog, fillet one side after it’s been out of the water for 20 minutes, throw it back in the water, and it will swim away. We don’t advise doing that, however, because that would be a senseless waste of a good fillet! The secret about tautog is the flavor. Generally, the taste is light and pleasantly mild because the species feeds primarily on crustaceans and mollusks. Blackfish use their front teeth to crunch right through the protective shells. You are what you eat, and you’ll taste like it too. You think lobster and crab tastes good? So does Mister Tautog.
Spring Blackfish Season is on the Block – DEEP to Cut Tautog Catch
However, Connecticut’s DEEP may cut the Spring blackfish or tautog season this year from the month of April. It appears that the plan at this point in time is to open a shortened season this year later in the Summer and Fall in order to reduce the estimated number of tautog taken by 53 percent. DEEP closed public comment on the issue yesterday and will soon announce whether it’ll be yea or nay for the Spring blackfish season.
High Sea Charters – Striped Bass and Tautog – We Blackfish Too
Fishing Charter Captain Chris Leighton is known for his success in chasing down big striped bass, but some of our customers love the tautog he also knows how to find. We’ll keep you posted right here on the latest information we get from the officials at DEEP.
If you haven’t done so already, book your fishing charter for stripers now with High Seas Charters! Check out our rates, give us a call, and we hope to see you soon! And if you like to blackfish, keep your fingers crossed for the Spring 2012 Tautog season.
